The 41st
Historic Winton was a big success, bringing in bumper crowds despite
the threat of inclement weather.
Diehard motor enthusiasts and car lovers flocked to Winton Motor
Raceway on the weekend for Australia’s longest-running and most
popular national heritage car and motorcycle race meet. “Fine
weather attracted the biggest Saturday attendance ever,” organiser
Noel Wilcox said. “We
were very lucky in terms of the weather which predicted more rain
and wind than the two short showers experienced late afternoon on
Sunday. Nevertheless,
all races were run well before sunset to the delight of the
spectator crowd.” Those
with a love of motorsport, vehicles and its history revelled in both
the action of the races and the static displays. Noel
said that more than 2,500 heritage vehicles were on display in the
car parks around the outside of the track, making Winton Motor
Raceway a spectacle of car design and mechanical mastery.
“Choosing one highlight for the event is nearly impossible,” he
said. “As well as the 40 race events, the parade laps were fantastic
featuring some rare sights including rare Austin 7s, Model A Fords,
Citroen Palais station wagon, Ansett Clipper bus, Volvo hearse and
Vintage Ambulances.
“Another success we are thrilled about is that the number of campers
at the track almost doubled this year, so it’s great to know so many
from far away are coming to Winton for this great heritage event.”
